THE PLACE IN BETWEEN

Sunday, September 23, 2012

Hi-diddly-ho folks,

Sorry it's a little quiet on the ground here. Truth be told, there's not a lot going on. We're in a weird liminal phase. Not quite on holiday, not quite studying. It's doing my husbands head in.

Home base is currently Milton Keynes and by next Friday we will have lived in eight different places in the past month. Suffice to say I have become a packing Ninja. Don't get me wrong, we've seen some amazing sites.

Yesterday we headed out to Bletchley Park - this is the actual site where British codebreakers beavered away during WWII and according to historians were responsible for shortening the war by at least two years and more likely by four.

Wandering through the buildings, which recount various stories from the War I struggled to put into words what I felt at the time. On reflection it probably goes a little like this.

As I attempted to wrangle William around the museum while he shrieked and screamed and pressed anything with buttons one of the elderly staff members simply smiled at me and said "Well love they did it for him," and screaming shrieking gremlin aside, she was right. They fought so we could live. Then once the war was won and there were no more codes to break they turned off the machines and went back to their lives...

Moving eight times in a month suddenly didn't seem so bad.

Scott didn't care at all for the history of the place but he was rather captured by the Colossus. You may (or may not) know that Bletchley Park is also the birth place of the modern day computer. It took up the space of a small bus and sounded much like a jet plane taking off (as an aside progress has done amazing things for the computer). If you get the chance I highly recommend a visit!
